The simple stories told in that quiet, matter of fact voice just worked. With computer game versions of telly series all the rage at the moment, it comes as no surprise to see Magic Roundabout appearing The title screen contains all the well known figures from the series like Brian the snail, Mr. McHenry, Basil, Florence, and scrolls to keep Dougal in the middle. Apart from sugar lumps, there are the familiar red trees, and of course Dougal's other friends from the enchanted garden. The object is to guide Dougal in his task of building a house of sugar cubes before it's time for bed. The sugar cubes dot the landscape, but the house must be built by pushing the cubes to the magic toadstool. Sugar also forms his diet (dentists take note!), and to keep his energy from falling too low, he must continually top it up with a lump. The screen only shows a small part of the total playing area. The game is simple in layout, the graphics are nothing special, but young Roundabout fans will like them. Magic Roundabout should be in the 11's and under category.\r\r\nUnknown","How long was it since I'd last seen these characters I asked myself? It's nice to hear about them again. The task is fairly simple in this game - just build a house from sugar lumps at the toadstool. Sounds easy enough, doesn't it? Well I searched and searched and could I find the toadstool before (and very quickly) all three lives had gone? All graphics are large and colourful, with the characteristic red trees planted around, and all the great names like Brian, Dylan, Ermintrude, Zebedee and Florence, who float effortlessly around the screen. Sound - well the Magic Roundabout theme is there, although a little broken up. Quite a child's game. I enjoyed it, but still only an average game.\r\r\nUnknown","The graphics are nice enough, but the game fails to recall the real atmosphere of the TV series. Magic Roundabout is obviously intended to appeal to children, and no doubt it will, although I think there isn't enough playability in the game. Children who use computers are remarkably sophisticated in their needs when it comes to interactive games. I also found the inlay instructions misleading, because I failed to find a toadstool or a train anywhere - a child might give up more quickly.\r\nUnknown"],"OverallSummary":"General Rating: May prove popular with young children, lacks content for older people.","Page":"188,189","Denied":false,"Award":"Not Awarded","Reviewers":[{"Name":"Unknown","Score":"","ScoreSuffix":""},{"Name":"Unknown","Score":"","ScoreSuffix":""},{"Name":"Unknown","Score":"","ScoreSuffix":""}],"ScreenshotText":[],"BlurbText":[],"TranscriptBy":"Chris Bourne","ReviewScores":[{"Header":"Use of Computer","Score":"58%","Text":""},{"Header":"Graphics","Score":"57%","Text":""},{"Header":"Getting Started","Score":"52%","Text":""},{"Header":"Playability","Score":"54%","Text":""},{"Header":"Addictive Qualities","Score":"38%","Text":""},{"Header":"Value For Money","Score":"45%","Text":""},{"Header":"Overall","Score":"51%","Text":""}],"CompilationReviewScores":[]},{"Issue":{"Name":"Sinclair User Issue 34, Jan 1985","Price":"£0.85","ReleaseDate":"1984-12-13","Editor":"Bill Scolding","TotalPages":212,"HasCoverTape":false,"FlannelPanel":"Editor: Bill Scolding\r\nDeputy Editor: John Gilbert\r\nConsultant Editor: Mike Johnston\r\nStaff Writer: Chris Bourne, Clare Edgeley\r\nIllustrator/Designer: Craig Kennedy\r\nAdvertisement Manager: Rob Cameron\r\nDeputy Advertisement Manager: Louise Fanthorpe\r\nAdvertisement Sales Executive: Kathy McLennan\r\nProduction Assistant: James McClure\r\nAdvertisement Secretary: Claudia Viertel\r\nEditorial Assistant: Colette McDermott\r\nSubscriptions Manager: Carl Dunne\r\nAssistant Publisher: Neil Wood\r\nPublisher: Gerry Murray\r\n\r\nSinclair User is published monthly by EMAP Business & Computer Publications\r\n\r\n96,271 Jan-June 1984\r\n\r\nTelephone\r\nEditorial and advertising departments\r\n[redacted]\r\n\r\nIf you would like to contribute to Sinclair User please send programs or articles:\r\nSinclair User\r\nEMAP Business & Computer Publications\r\n[redacted]\r\n\r\nOriginal programs should be on cassette and articles should be typed. This game is based on the series that was loved by millions.\r\n\r\nThe atmosphere is recreated in the enchanted garden as Dougal (the dog) is busily trying to build a home before it is time for bed. You, as Dougal, go around the garden collecting lumps of sugar to construct a house at the magic toadstool.\r\n\r\nDougal has the option to either push the lumps to the toadstool or eat them, as these lumps provide the energy. Brian, Mr. McHenry, Basil, Florence, Zebedee, Ermintrude, Dylan, Mr. Rusty and the revolving Magic Roundabout. Zebedee has the annoying habit of appearing at random intervals causing a life to be lost.\r\n\r\nAlthough the graphics are not too clear, with much character bleeding when overlapping occurs, the fantasy and theme music overcome this grumble quite easily. The latest of these is CRL's The Magic Roundabout, in which you control Dougal, trying to build a home before it's time for bed.\r\n\r\nDougal has to keep up his strength, so as he shoves sugar about he also has to eat some of the many white blocks scattered around. The sugar has to be loaded onto a train, which will transport 12 lumps from the platform to the Magic Toadstool. Hazards include most of the other MR characters - Florence, Brian et al - who float round the forest, but who can be deterred with a quick bark. Contact with them damages Dougal's delicate nose and in the process you lose one of your three lives.\r\n\r\nThe graphics aren't at all bad. Dougal's shown as a large yellow character, made up from six or eight UDGs. The animation's very smooth, but he does look odd sliding sideways, up, or down the screen. The action takes place on a blue background, dotted with many red trees, which scrolls jerkily as Dougal approaches the limits of the current screen.\r\n\r\nThere are a few attribute problems, such as when Dougal passes behind or in front of the trees, but overall it is good.\r\n\r\nToggling F turns on the 'music', a staccato rendition of a vaguely familiar air, but I couldn't quite work out what. A two-tone goes when Dougal's immediately next to a sugar lump, indicating he can eat it or push it. It's very handy, but the bark's ineffectual.\r\n\r\nThere are a few good touches, such as the way the sugar bag at bottom right waxes and wanes as an energy gauge, and Dougal turns to bark at you if you're careless enough to lose him a life (nose?).\r\n\r\nFar from an arcade addict's taste, The Magic Roundabout is more for the younger user. But the game's not as easy as it sounds. It can be tricky piling sugar to shove, barking at or dodging Mr McHenry and his pals, rushing to make the train, keeping an eye on the sugar bag and hoping Zebedee won't appear with his favourite phrase.","ReviewerComments":[],"OverallSummary":"","Page":"49","Denied":false,"Award":"Not Awarded","Reviewers":[{"Name":"Bryan Skinner","Score":"7","ScoreSuffix":"/10"}],"ScreenshotText":[],"BlurbText":[],"TranscriptBy":"Chris Bourne","ReviewScores":[{"Header":"Overall","Score":"7/10","Text":""}],"CompilationReviewScores":[]}]}]
